The movie was said to have clearly exceeded the expectations of analysts, having earlier been projected to make an estimated $150 million for its domestic opening.

Asides from garnering an estimated $185 million opening this weekend in North America, ‘The Lion King’ also made $98 million in China, the second-largest movie market in the world.

The feat also makes the Disney’s remake the highest-grossing opening for the month of July and the second highest-grossing for the year after ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which recently exceeded ‘Avatar’ to become the highest-grossing movie ever.

“We’ve had a spectacular run this weekend. We really did know we had something special with ‘The Lion King’ given its popularity with fans of all ages,” said Cathleen Taff, Disney’s president of distribution, while speaking on the remake.
