A 19-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Abubakar has been charged with attempted suicide by the Kano state police command.

Last week, Abubakar mounted a tall advertisement billboard in Gadar Lado along Zaria Road and threatened to jump down from it if certain popular TikTok celebrities don’t show up.

Security operatives mobilised to the scene, attempting to de-escalate the tense standoff.

Bystanders gathered, with many speculating whether the act was a desperate cry for help or merely a social media stunt to gain fame.

After hours of negotiation, security officials successfully brought the man down. He was taken to the police hospital in Bompai for medical attention due to weakness from lack of food.

Abubakar, an indigene of Adamawa state, was however, arraigned last Friday before magistrate court No. 5 in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano, on a charge of attempted suicide.

Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the state police spokesperson, confirmed the development on social media.

A court hearing is also scheduled to take place in the coming days.
