Spyro, the Nigerian singer, has recalled how his father stopped paying his school fees because of his bad grades.
In a recent chat with Chude Jideonwo, Spyro opened up about his relationship with his father, who is a pastor.
The ‘Only Fine Girl’ hitmaker described his dad as a “disciplinarian” who stopped paying his school fees because “I wasn’t doing well”.
Spyro disclosed that his mother took the responsibility and “struggled” to see him through school.
The 33-year-old singer said “I felt like my dad hated me,” adding that it affected their relationship.
“When I was younger, I wasn’t doing well in school and my dad pulled back and withdrew from paying my school fees,” he said.
“My mum took the responsibility and she sent me to secondary school and university. I saw her really struggle to do these things and it wasn’t easy for her.
“My dad was just trying to be a disciplinarian, I guess. He was like ‘You’re not coming home with good grades, I’m going to stop paying, I won’t keep investing in you if you’re not bringing good grades home.’
“Now, I would not blame him. But it affected my relationship with him growing up. I felt like my dad hated me.
“Sometimes I would even ask my mum if she is sure that he is my father. He was just too high-handed. I guess it was because he is a pastor and you know the way pastors are with their kids.”
Born Olusipe David, Spyro rose to prominence after releasing the hit song ‘Who Is Your Guy’ in November 2022.
On March 3, the singer combined with Tiwa Savage for the song’s remix.
In September 2023, he released ‘Only Fine Girl’. He would later team up with Simi for the song’s remix.
Spyro has also put out tracks like ‘No Gree For Anybody’, ‘Billing’, ‘For You’ and ‘Funke’.
Spyro had previously revealed that he sold recharge cards to pay for his studio sessions.
