The Sony Pictures’ blockbuster superhero film was released on December 13.

FilmOne Entertainment, West Africa’s distributor and representatives of the Sony Pictures studio, confirmed that the title has become one of the top five all-time highest-grossing films at the Nigerian box office.

It is now ranking alongside titles such as ‘Black Panther’, ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga’, ‘The Wedding Party’, and ‘Aquaman’ as it continues its run.

Nigerian cinemas have remarkably recovered from the impact of the pandemic since resumption from the lockdown and have recorded major box office successes in 2021.

There were such titles as ‘Prophetess’, ‘My Village People’, ‘Eternals’, ‘Shang Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings’, ‘The Ghost & The Tout Too’, ‘No Time To Die’ and ‘Fast & Furious 9’ — all hitting past N100 million.

According to an analysis published by FilmOne Entertainment via its quarterly publication, FilmOne Digest, the Nigerian box office recorded 5% more ticket sales in September 2021 than in September 2019.

This was driven accelerated by the positive performance of ‘Shang Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings’ and ‘The Ghost & The Tout Too’.

With other big titles currently at the box office, potentially on course to realise N150 million each on average, analysts anticipate that the year would most likely end with December realising approximately a billion naira.

Projections have it that the last cinema week running between December 24 and 30 is expected to be the biggest week in Nigerian cinema history, with revenues from ticket sales projected to hit N430 million.

Cinemas are currently operating under limited seating capacities due to precautions necessitated by the pandemic.
