Did you wake up one day to find your hair falling out or thinning significantly?
Hair loss causes many to panic, leading to bad decisions like spending a high amount of money on cosmetic products that probably won’t work.
Before dealing with your hair loss, one must first find out the cause of it.
While some cases of hair loss can be reversed by changes in diets and lifestyles, some are more permanent until the next scientific breakthrough at least.
Here are six common causes of hair loss in both men and women.
Medical conditions and medications
Medical conditions like thyroid, or certain skin and scalp infections may cause a high level of hair loss.
Medications used for the treatment of health conditions like cancer, depression, high blood pressure, thyroid, and heart problems can also cause hair loss.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Hereditary factors may also contribute to hair loss in both men and women.
In men, hair loss happens on the scalp and in the case of women, there is a visible thinning over the top and front of the scalp.
Poor nutrition
Poor nutrition, often the result of crash diets and eating disorders, can also cause hair loss.
Low levels of protein and iron in the diet can also lead to hair loss.
Hormones
Hormones and the genes that carry them are the most common factors for baldness among males and females.
A hormonal imbalance is even likely to cause permanent hair loss.
In males, the testosterone hormone triggers the start of hair loss, whereas, in females, it can be due to pregnancy, childbirth, use of birth control pills or the onset of menopause.
Alopecia areata
This is an auto-immune disease where the hair follicles are attacked by the immune system.
This disease usually begins in childhood and one is at higher risk if someone in your family already suffers from this disease.
Vitamin A
Too much intake of vitamin A or food that contains significant amounts of it can also cause hair loss.
