Vybz Kartel, the Jamaican dancehall singer, has regained his freedom after spending 13 years in prison.

Kartel, along with three other men — Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones — were arrested and imprisoned in 2011 for the murder of their associate Clive “Lizard” Williams.

They were convicted in 2014 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, in March 2024, their convictions were overturned by the privy council due to juror misconduct, prompting an appeal to determine if a retrial was necessary.

On Wednesday, the court of appeal of Jamaica decided against a retrial.

Marva McDonald-Bishop, the newly appointed president of the court of appeal, said the court had weighed up “the egregious nature and seriousness of the offence along with the evidence supplied, the expense of a retrial, and lack of access to witnesses”.

According to the court, the singer is also in poor health, meaning a retrial could further impact his physical and mental well-being. “We conclude that the interests of justice do not require a new trial,” she said.

While Kartel, Campbell, and St John have been freed, Jones will remain in custody due to an unrelated sentence.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, celebrated his release by sharing a video on X, showing him rejoicing with his wife.

In an accompanying caption, he wrote, “I’m out! Me and wifey.”

Kartel rose to prominence in 2003 after having a string of hit songs in Jamaica. He is one of Jamaica’s most influential artistes. He has collaborated with international stars such as Jay-Z and Rihanna.

His best-known hits include ‘Clarks’, ‘Ramping Shop’ and ‘Summer Time’.
