Muhammadu Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has assured corps members in the state that the Sharia law is not binding on non-Muslims.
The monarch spoke when he received the 2022 batch ‘B’ stream II corps members in his palace on Thursday.
During the courtesy visit led by Muhammad Nakamba, state coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Sultan assured the corps members of their safety.
He also told the corps members that their rights to religion would be guaranteed, adding that no one would force them to practise Islam.
“In Sokoto, Sharia law is only binding on Muslims, nobody will force you to wear Hijab or force you to obey Islamic laws if you are not a Muslim,” he said.
“If you are posted to schools, impact the lives of the students, make them better than you met them.”
The monarch, however, enjoined the corps members to respect the cultures and customs of their host communities.
“If you have a problem at the place of your primary assignment or where you are posted to, contact the district head over there; they are your guardians in the community,’’ he added.
Also speaking, the state NYSC coordinator assured the Sultan that the corps members would obey laid down rules and regulations in the state.
Nakamba said the corps members demonstrated good conduct during their stay in the orientation camp.
