Selena Gomez, the US singer and actress, has been criticised over her opinion on the immigration policy of President Donald Trump’s administration.

On Sunday, immigration actions were reported nationwide, and multiple agencies, including US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), were involved in the apprehensions.

As of Monday, ICE reported making more than 1,100 arrests nationwide.

Gomez, 32, had sympathised with people affected by the immigration crackdown in a now-deleted video on her Instagram page.

In the footage, the singer, who is of Mexican heritage, is seen crying about how “all my people are getting attacked”.

“I just want to say I’m sorry. The children. I don’t understand. I am so sorry,” she said.

“I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I will try everything, I promise.”

In another post shared to her Instastory, Gomez wrote, “apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people”.

In response, Sam Parker, a former US senate candidate, accused the Grammy-winning singer of having an “entitlement attitude”.

Parker said Gomez should be deported for “picking illegals over America”.

“Selena Gomez picked illegals over America because she’s the 3rd generation descendent of Mexican illegals who received citizenship in the ’87 Amnesty,” he wrote on X.

“She has an entitlement attitude toward America, like her illegal grandparents. Maybe Selena should be deported, too? Deport Selena Gomez.”

In her response, Gomez wrote, “Oh Mr Parker, Mr Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.”

Selena was born on July 22, 1992, in Grand Prairie, Texas. She has described herself as a proud third-generation American-Mexican.

Her grandparents Mary and Ricardo Gomez immigrated to the US from Mexico in the 1970s.

The singer’s father was subsequently born in the US, and her grandparents obtained citizenship after nearly two decades of living in the country.
