Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hailed the revival of the Lagos Fanti Carnival as a vibrant reconnection to Africa’s cultural roots during Sunday’s colourful festivities.
The carnival, which traces its origins to the late 19th century, was founded by formerly enslaved Africans, many of Yoruba descent, who returned from Brazil and other parts of the Americas.
The returnees settled in Lagos Island’s Brazilian quarters, including Campos and Isale Eko, blending Afro-Brazilian traditions with local culture.
Their legacy lives on through samba rhythms, elaborate masquerades, Catholic-infused festivals, and dazzling street performances.
Sunday’s event transformed Lagos Island into a living canvas of heritage, with attendees adorned in vibrant Kampala fabrics such as sunshine yellows, bold reds and whites, and striking blues.
The festival featured an Afro-Brazilian food display, a heritage art exhibition, and a grand parade that brought the streets to life.
In a statement on X, Sanwo-Olu praised the carnival as a revival of Lagos’ “spirit of unity and resilience”.
Sanwo-Olu stated that the carnival signifies the return of “the spirit of unity, resilience, and joy.”
“Today, we were part of something truly special, the return of the Lagos Fanti Carnival. It wasn’t just a celebration; it was a powerful reconnection to our roots, a revival of a cultural legacy that has shaped who we are,” the statement reads.

“Today, the streets of Lagos Island transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colour, rhythm, and expressions of community.
“The Fanti Carnival, with roots dating back to the 1800s, was enriched by Afro-Brazilian returnees who brought not only samba beats and intricate costumes but also architectural artistry.
“Today, we experienced the return of this historic event and the unique cultural identity of Lagos Island.”
