Saidi Balogun, the ace actor, has voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying it is “successfully driving a transformative agenda for Nigeria”.
During a recent appearance on Nollywood On Radio, Balogun addressed the widespread criticism of the present government, explaining his rationale for endorsing its policies.
He argued that leaders of a certain age and stature are often more focused on cementing their legacy than on accumulating wealth — a profile he believes Tinubu fits.
“So if I decided to say okay this one is old enough, he is rich enough and when people get to certain age, all they are thinking of is what will people say when I leave? They have had that money when they needed it, now all they would be thinking about is transformation,” he said.
“I want to be like Awolowo, I want to be like… And I decided to say I know all of you but this one is better out of all of them. We should think, that is why if you abuse till tomorrow, I will just laugh. Abuse me today, you will praise me tomorrow.”
The actor also highlighted “several positive economic indicators” under the current government.
He pointed to a significant rise in Nigeria’s foreign reserves and praised recent reforms to the student loan scheme.
“Like today, our foreign reserves has gone up to $40 billion. Those people, they have been in government before, what happened to our foreign reserves? Look at what they are doing to student loans now, students in the north are singing,” he added.
With a career spanning over four decades since he began acting in 1978, Balogun is regarded as one of Nollywood’s most esteemed veterans.
He has featured in countless films and received numerous awards for his contributions to the industry.
