Ajebutter22’s new extended play (EP) ‘Lust In Lagos’ features the usual suspect (Boj), some underground artists, and songs accompanied by his usual cadence and themes.

The artist’s sound is far from what you are accustomed to; you might not even hear it on the radio or come across it on a DJ’s laptop at Quilox or Secret Palace. Yet, Ajebutter remains a music icon known for his infrequent music releases—a single leading to a project, a reset, and then a repeat. That kind of thing.

Lust In Lagos (LIL) starts with the groovy, gratitude-themed “Soft Prayer,” a slow, ticking jam where the artist sings about his love for the good life and putting in the work to make it happen. Tim Lyre’s fantastic vocals are put to good use by Crowther and Ajebutter, and the cool production also helps, getting better as the song winds down.

When Ajebutter sings about sex, he is sassy and fun. On “Gbe Kini Yen,” the duo of Minz and Boj are even more confident; their delivery is raw, sweet, and confrontational. They never hide their desire for some action. This song continues the upbeat pattern of the EP.

Show Dem Camp, one of Ajebutter’s associates, released an album in 2024 titled “No Love In Lagos.” When I hear the guitar and bassline-driven “Love Don Finish 4 Lagos,” it conveys a similar message: looking out for oneself. Ajebutter only echoes the notion some Lagosians have about Lagos women’s desire for fun and monetary gain over romance. Taymi B (the artist’s sister) and Brazy even repeat this thought process.

Ajebutter wears his romance garb on “Wait For Me,” a mild track that serves as an open letter of affection to an inquisitive lover, perhaps. This song sounds like what a lover based in the UK would sing to his Lagos-based girlfriend. The artist likens how a girl makes him feel to when “NEPA” brings electricity—a light play on words, affection, and romance. Spinall-assisted “Ilashe 2 Ibiza” is the coda to the fun-filled time out.

Lust In Lagos is a pleasurable EP, bound to ignite your thought process, swirl you to the dance floor, and more. Ajebutter keeps it real and simple. Another classy joint.
