Bobrisky, the controversial crossdresser, is reportedly set to be released from the Kirikiri Correctional Center on August 5.

Born Idris Okuneye, the social media celebrity was sentenced to six months in prison on April 12 by Abimbola Awogboro, the Lagos high court judge, for abusing the naira.

Awogboro, in her verdict, also ruled that the sentence was without the option of a fine. The judge held that the jail term commenced on March 24, the day of her arrest.

But on Wednesday, Punch quoted a prison source as saying “Bobrisky will be released on Monday, August 5”.

Ayo Olumofin, Bobrisky’s lawyer, also confirmed the development to the news outlet.

“Yes, it’s about that time for him to be released. There is nothing specific that would be done during his release. I might not go. I’m engaged outside Lagos. Maybe other lawyers will go,” he said.

Efforts by TheCable Lifestyle to reach Rotimi Oladokun, the spokesperson of the Lagos command of the Nigerian Correctional Centre (NCS), to comment on the matter have proved abortive.

In April, the crossdresser, who was charged with four counts of naira abuse, filed a notice of appeal challenging the six-month prison sentence.

Bobrisky had hoped that the court of appeal would set aside the sentence and replace it with an option of a N50,000 fine on each count.
