The Nigerian Twittersphere has been buzzing with mixed reactions after Naira Marley, a controversial singer, cancelled his planned protest against the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS).
The renewed protests against SARS had begun on Saturday after a video showing a man allegedly gunned down in Delta by operatives of the police unit went viral.
As a result of this, Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police (IGP), had banned SARS from undertaking routine patrols and search duties.
Public figures also called for protest using the ‘EndSARS’ hashtag, with Runtown volunteering to lead a march against police brutality at the Lekki toll gate on October 8.
Naira Marley, who had also planned to lead a march alongside his fans on Tuesday, however, cancelled his protest.
Reacting to the abrupt cancellation, quite a number of Nigerians took to social media platforms, especially Twitter, to register their different opinions while also urging Runtown not to cancel his own protest.
Below are what Nigerians had to say:
“Thursday Is Thursday” – Runtown says No Going back on his proposed Protest on #EndSARS
Hope he won’t Naira Marley us too? pic.twitter.com/NFev3k21MB

Naira Marley was here saying young Nigerians like online chit chat and protest. He organised something. Then, on the morning, cancel it and says he’s having a chat with the Nigeria Police Force on Instagram. Ok.

Why did you pick Naira Marley to drill you? Why not Segalink? https://t.co/TBmcOftfdo

Truth is these Musicians have our interest but they’re going about it the wrong way. Stop leading protest individually, 2face, Naira Marley, runtown, they’ll always silence you.
At least 20 Music Stars should come together, they’re afraid of protests, more reason it must happen.
— DANNY WALTER👑 #ShoePlug (@DannyWalta) October 6, 2020
I wonder why Nigeria always looks for ways to silence its youths from expressing themselves.
Why is our government keen on our silence?
Naira Marley or Not, the protest is slated for tomorrow to Friday. The protest has no face. We don’t need your IG live!#WednesdayProtests

The thing with celebrities is this: they are humans also, they want to preserve themselves, their careers etc
Many of them won't place "your" needs above theirs. It's normal human behavior.
Am I surprised at Naira Marley's decision? No
We need to speak for ourselves.

Let’s be honest if you were in Naira Marley shoes and the IG of police calls you and say you should calm down that all would be put in place what would you do? Still protest? Let’s not be hypocrites abeg.

I’ll say it again. These social media announcements no carry water. The IGP should come on 10PM news and announce the cancellation of SARS, imagine being on Naira Marley’s live and people are complaining that sars is still on the road. The problem hasn’t be solved yet!
— DREYLO (@RealDreylo) October 6, 2020
Sowore arranged protest, no statement from the minister not to talk of the police. The police would just go out in their usuals to arrest Sowore and his protesters.
Naira Marley announced a protest late yesterday, Minister begged him to chill and now Police….

I just want the Government to know that whether they speak to Naira Marley or Tope Alabi on Instagram, the protest will still happen unless they end SARS officially.

Naira Marley is a Nigerian citizen, and entitled to organize and lead protests against bad policies and practices. The problem here is the implication of @PoliceNG honoring a citizen under investigation for fraud as ambassador of the public while cracking down on model citizens.
— Gimba Kakanda (@gimbakakanda) October 6, 2020
It's only Naira Marley that canceled the protest he called.
Runtown has chosen to continue with the one he called.
The PROTEST i would join has no FACE and it would go on at @PoliceNG HEADQUARTERS in Lagos from tomorrow till Friday.
If you are so interested, join any of these.

Some of your Twitter influencers ran out of contents on Sunday when the #EndSARSBrutality was blowing hot here but they suddenly got back their spirit to call-out Naira marley for calling off the protest. Stop misleading the thunder.#EndSarsParmanentlyNow #EndSARSNotBanSARS
— 😍💕 Òkun First Daughter😍😍 (@Treatp5) October 6, 2020
The fact that Naira Marley canceled the planned protest is a REASONABLE thing to do since the Minister of Youths and also the Police have engaged him, assuring that reasonable steps would be taken.
Those castigating him from UK can come to Nigeria to lead the PROTEST.
— Tosin Olugbenga (@TosinOlugbenga) October 6, 2020
It’ll come to a time when you’d call people out for a protest but they wouldn’t take you serious and the turn up gon’ be low. A lot of people ain’t going to work today cos of this protest & Naira Marley couldn’t cancel it yesterday? It had to be this morning? Jokes on NM 💔
— Shola (@jayyth3dope) October 6, 2020
There’s a reason they picked Naira Marley of all the Celebs available to choose from.
They needed someone that would just nod and nod. https://t.co/JDVorYCMKj
— Man of Letters. (@Letter_to_Jack) October 6, 2020
Naira Marley was here blabbing about how young Nigerians like online chit chat and protest.
Man organised a protest,on the morning he canceled it like 2baba(2face) and says he’s having a chat with the Nigeria Police Force on Instagram as back up. BRAVO 👏🏿
— BENUEGIANT🦍 (@one_dosh) October 6, 2020
Y’all really expect Naira Marley to lead a protest? Someone that sang Japa lol
— ‘Lola Roll-in Dollars🤩 (@Fayokunmii) October 3, 2020
First it was innocent idibia (2face), now Naira Marley just did same. Watin dey occur….. 🤔🤔
"We call ourselves the most populous country in NIGERIA really? But when it comes to protest we are the least populous country".

We are not out of options with #EndSARS protest:
Naira Marley cancelled the protest when police negotiated to have a discussion with people on his IG.
Runtown and #EndSarsParmanentlyNow are not going back on their promises.#RevolutionNow is more than ready anytime.
