Desmond Elliot, an actor and politician, has come under intense criticism on social media over his defensive stance on godfatherism in politics.

The movie star, who contested and won the Surulere constituency in 2015, had earlier spoken about his incursion into the country’s political scene during an interview ahead of Edo state election.

In the now-viral footage, he berated Godwin Obaseki, Edo governor, for adopting “Edo no be Lagos” as his re-election mantra, describing his own political career as being a product of godfatherism.

His statement has since opened the floodgates of negative reactions on social media platforms, particularly Twitter, where users have been expressing their disappointment.

“It’s obvious, we all saw the public toilet you constructed as constituency project for undisclosed amount of money. It is however a crying shame that you are proud to stroke your chains of slavery in public. Lagos is dysfunctional & can’t be a yardstick for Edo!,” Segun Awosanya wrote.

“Desmond Elliot is destroying the process that cemented the ‘not too young to run’ agenda, I’ve said it that the youths in govt today are the most useless leaders, Yahaya bello, bashir Ahmed, Desmond Elliot, akin Alabi etc. Very unfortunate that the future blinks,” another user wrote.
