A maiden name simply refers to a woman’s surname before marriage.
It is not surprising in Nigeria to see more women place adverts on national newspapers for a change of name after marriage.
This custom is not peculiar to Africa as a chunk of women in western countries like Britain and the US also adopt their spouse’s name upon marriage.
Though it’s seen as an act of submissiveness, especially in African culture, there is a question on how society should view women who choose to retain their maiden names after tying the knot.
For some, their maiden name is not just a name but a brand. This is the case for a number of female celebrities whose names have grown to become one to reckon with.
So guys, what happens when your heartthrob says she doesn’t want your surname?
