The police in Niger state have arrested 16 students of the Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai.
Wasiu Abiodun, the state’s police spokesman, who broke the news on Tuesday, said they were caught during what appeared to be a “cult initiation” on July 7.
Abiodun said that the suspects would be arraigned after thorough investigation into the case.
”On July 7 at about 21:00 hours, acting on credible intelligence, police operatives attached to Lapai Division arrested the suspects,” the spokesman stated.
“They were arrested for being suspected members of Black Axe cult group at Gwaranyo lodge, State Low Cost area of Lapai while conducting their annual celebration in a room rented by one of the suspects.
“Items recovered during the celebration and initiation ceremony include one small axe, one army trouser, one army face cap, a pot soaked with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
“Others are a 15-litre jerrican containing concoction suspected to have been mixed with illicit drugs, two bottles of Castello alcoholic drink, and one mp3 radio player.”
In April, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had nabbed two Abuja-based partners who allegedly specialised in selling drugged cookies to school children and other inhabitants.
