The Lagos police command has arrested a secondary school principal in the Igando area of the state who allegedly flogged and inflicted wounds on a female student.
A video had surfaced online showing a female student with marks on her body, possibly as a result of flogging.
The footage provoked a chorus of condemnation on social media with some users demanding the arrest and prosecution of the principal.
NAN reports that Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, revealed that the school principal was picked up on Friday by the Igando police division for interrogation.
Hundeyin said the Lagos state ministry of education has also begun an investigation into the case.
In 2022, a secondary school student in Lagos died after he was allegedly flogged by a teacher over homework.
Emmanuel Amidu, the deceased, was a JSS 2 student of Simple Faith Schools, Agbara.
The 12-year-old was said to have passed away at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
In the same year, the Lagos state government ordered the closure of Unic Vilos Montessori School after a two-year-old pupil was allegedly brutalised by her teacher.
Folashade Adefisayo, the state’s commissioner for education, said the affected school operated without approval.
She also said the state government would clamp down on such learning centres.
