The fifth season of Shuga, the drama series produced by MTV, has premiered in Lagos.

The event united the cast, the crew, and journalists on Thursday.

MTV Shuga’s new season combines an ensemble of established on-screen actors and rising stars alike.

Starred in the series are Adesua Etomi-Wellington, John Njamah, Tomiwa Tegbe, Maggie Osuome, Okey Uzoeshi, Gbubemi Ejeye, Genoveva Umeh, Ilooise Omohimin, Sharon Jatto, Lexan Peters, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Susan Pwajok.

Kanaga Eme of the BBTitans reality show and Chioma Edak will be playing lead and supporting acts respectively, having come through the MTV Shuga Naija public auditions in 2022.

Speaking at the premiere, Anita Adesiyan, the country manager at MTV Staying Alive Foundation, said the fifth season partners with Paramount, UNITAID, and the Global Innovation Fund to address issues on gender-based violence.

Also addressed in the series, she added, are such matters as COVID-19 vaccine confidence, women empowerment, modern contraception, and HIV self-testing.

“True to our ethos of promoting safer lifestyle choices and advocating against harmful cultural practices through entertaining drama, the new MTV Shuga Naija season will give our viewers a broader perspective on everyday issues that affect young people as they try to find their place in the world,” Adesiyan said.

The eight-part series is set for a May 7 African premiere on MTV Base (DSTV channel 322 and GOTV 72) at 21:00 WAT or 22:00 CAT.

In addition, the show will be simulcast on MTV Base in South Africa and debut on BET Africa (DSTV 129 and GOTV 21) at 21:00 WAT or 22:00 CAT from Wednesday, May 10.

Repeats of MTV Shuga Naija season 5 will air Wednesdays on BET Africa (DSTV channel 129 and GOtv 21) at 21:00 WAT or 22:00 CAT.

It will air on Thursdays vua MTV Base (DSTV 322 and GOtv 72) at 22:00 WAT or 23:00 CAT.

The series will also be broadcast on free-to-air platform NTA later in the year.

All episodes of the season, it us understood, will be available on Netflix and YouTube.
