Speaking at the book reading session on Saturday, Adedokun said corruption in Nigeria has “become all pervasive”, making it “hard to eradicate”.

The book reading was held at Rovingheights bookstore, Landmark, Lagos Island.

‘Ethnicity Eats, Corruption Feasts’ is a book comprising articles written by Adedokun since 2016.

In the book, the writer, a columnist with The PUNCH and TheCable, argued that corruption is beyond the “middle class but has spread across all human lives”.

“Nigeria has got too much poverty. And a country in which people are as poor as Nigeria cannot even be talking about eradicating corruption. It is a joke. Because there are things that are fundamental like the survival of people and their dignity,” he said.

“Any society where the humanity of people is taken away from them, where they find it hard to survive, it does not matter the country, the people will be corrupt. The country will degenerate. So my perception about corruption is that the fundamental thing that we need to do is to improve the condition of Nigerians. Increase their ability to take care of themselves, and fend for their families. You will see that corruption will reduce in Nigeria.”

In ‘Ethnicity Eats, Corruption Feasts’, the author wrote about Nigeria’s “deteriorating education” which he claimed is due to leadership failure.

However, Adedokun said Nigeria still has hope because the citizens are becoming more aware.

“If the Nigerian is well taken care of, I believe corruption will reduce in Nigeria. Because corruption is not just a middle-class issue in Nigeria again. Corruption is all-pervasive,” he said.
