Over the past few weeks, Nigerians have been battling petrol scarcity after the supply chain was disrupted.

A viral video had recently circulated on social media showing petrol being distributed as a souvenir at Ogbolu’s Lagos event.

The party, which was held on March 4, elicited a wave of mixed reactions from Nigerians.

On Saturday, the Lagos state government sealed Havilah Event Centre, where the party was held, for contravening public safety rules.

Subsequently, Abiodun Alabi, the Lagos commissioner of police (CP), ordered the arrest of persons involved in the distribution of petrol souvenirs.

Adekunle Ajisebutu, Lagos police spokesperson, announced the development, describing Ogbolu’s gesture as “reprehensible”.

In a post via her Instagram page, Ogbolu said: “I want to use this medium to apologise for the momentary indiscretion of bringing fuel souvenirs into the hall.

“My intent was just to show appreciation to my guests for turning up at my event during these hard times.

“I have paused to reflect and truly apologise and I thank you all for your understanding and criticisms.”

Earlier, Gbenga Omotosho, the commissioner for information, had said the state would probe the issue.

He said the action was dangerous and could lead to the loss of lives as it was against safety measures.

Omotosho said the safety commission would ensure that all parties involved are made to account for their actions.
