The National Examination Council (NECO) says about 74,819 external candidates are currently participating in the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
Datntani Ibrahim Wushishi, the registrar of NECO, spoke while monitoring the ongoing 2023 SSCE for external candidates at Government Science Secondary School Gombe, Gombe State.
He said he is satisfied with the conduct of the candidates at the centre.
The registrar said reports received from the various centres across the country indicated that the examination is going smoothly.
Wushishi urged candidates to shun examination malpractice, noting that various measures have been put in place to check the menace.
“The Council has put in place necessary measures to ensure that the examination is seamless,” he said.
The 2023 SSCE external examination started on November 20 and will end on December 20.
The candidates are to sit for the examination in 29 different subjects.
NECO’s internal SSCE for 2023 was conducted from July 10 to August 11, 2023.
Dantani earlier said a total of 1,205,888 candidates registered for the exam, representing 621,084 males and 584,804 females.
He said 1,196,985 sat for the 2023 SSCE internal, representing 616,398 males and 580,587 females.
The registrar said the number of candidates with five credits and above, including English and Mathematics is 737,308, representing 61.60%.
The number of candidates with five credits and above, irrespective of English and Mathematics is 1,013,611, representing 84.68%.
Dantani stated that the number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice in 2023 is 12,030 (0.07%) as against 13,594 (0.13%) in 2022, representing 61.60%.
He said 93 schools were found to have been involved in mass cheating.
