Adeyeye Ogunwusi, ooni of Ife, has sparked arguments on social media platforms after he made a “dubious” claim that a combination of some natural herbs can cure the novel coronavirus.

The monarch had taken to his social media page to share a video, where he explained how several natural herbs like onions, African pepper and neem tree among others can be used to treat COVID-19.

The ooni’s claim, which remains unconfirmed, comes despite warning from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the use of dubious methods to treat COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

It has, however, triggered a heated debate on social media platforms especially Twitter, where users are registering their different opinions on the matter.

While a segment of users accepted the ooni’s claim, others kicked against it, arguing that he should not be misleading the public by spreading “falsehood”.

If the ooni of Ife claims to have the herbal cure for #COVID19, I think we should really give a listening ear. We are at that point where we cannot dismiss any solution and let’s not just believe that only western medicines are potent. Before westernization, we still had our herbs,”  a Twitter user said.

“These claims are wrong. The Ooni is not a medical doctor or a virologist. This is an abuse of office to mislead and misinform the public. You will never hear the Queen of England, the Sultan of Brunei, the King of Saudi Arabia or the Emir of Abu Dhabi say such dangerous nonsense,” another user said.

Here is what some Nigerians had to say:
