The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally released Obi Cubana, the Abuja-based business mogul, after spending three nights in its custody.
The 46-year-old nightlife, who was grilled for alleged money laundering and tax fraud, was released on Thursday evening.
Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC’s spokesman, confirmed his release to TheCable Lifestyle.
“He has been released,” he wrote in a terse text message.
The anti-graft commission had invited the socialite for interrogation on Monday and detained him thereafter.
Onwumelu Valentine, the businessman’s friend and colleague, had earlier claimed that he was released from custody on Tuesday.
“Thank u Jesus!! @obi_cubana is free. We gat Jesus!!! . Dis Dance is for all my fans. I love u all,” he had announced via his Instagram page.
But a top source in the commission had dismissed the claim.
The case had elicited different reactions, as many Nigerians — including celebrities — registered their views on social media platforms.
2Baba, Peter Okoye, Ubi Franklin, and Cubana Chief Priest earlier joined other celebrities to demand the release of the socialite using the hashtag #FreeObiCubana.
Abba Bichi, son of Yusuf Bichi, the director-general (DG) of the Department of State Services (DSS), also described Cubana as “a man of dignity”.
Obi Cubana, whose real name is Obinna Iyiegbu, became a viral sensation after he buried his mother in grand style.
