The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, says it has suspended student union activities on campus for unruly behaviour.
In a statement signed by Abiodun Olanrewaju, the public relations officer of the university, the management said the suspension will be indefinite.
“Within a short period of its existence after its reinstatement, the students’ union have, over time, manifested misdemeanours that are unacceptable within the academic community.
“Apart from the fighting between the vice president and the director of socials in which head butts and broken bottles were freely used, the supporters of the president beat up the speaker on June 29 and 30, while the speaker’s supporters, in retaliation, beat up the president on September 15.
“Following security reports of incessant fighting and unruly behaviour during the congress of the students union and the recalcitrant attitude of their leadership, it has become inevitable for the university administration to suspend the activities of the students union of the Obafemi Awolowo University.
“In the light of the above, the university administration, at its emergency meeting held on Monday, November 6, came to an inevitable conclusion that activities of the students union be suspended until further notice.
“The university administration hereby enjoins all students to go about their lawful activities unhindered while the suspension persists.”
Olanrewaju said any student who parades himself as leaders or representatives of the students in causing disruption on campus “will be dealt according to the university rules and regulations and Code of Conduct, and according to laws of the land”.
The legislative arm of the student union had impeached the SU president at its sitting on Saturday over his alleged involvement in an attack on students on November 1.
