The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, has commenced renovation works in the various halls of residence across the school’s campus.
As at the time of filing this report, contractors and artisans are in some halls of residence and work is in progress in block C & D of Fajuyi hall.
TheCable Lifestyle gathered that the school management also intends to decongest the hostels, a move the students describe as “forceful eviction”.
They say this would mean leaving the hostels and moving off campus into the “arms of insecurity”.
But IO Aransi, the university’s dean of students, said: “It is true that we want to decongest the hostel as we are planning it on a larger scale to renovate all halls of residence on campus but we are having issues with students not leaving the halls of residence for their various homes.
“You can imagine a student was telling me that he can’t leave the hostel because he has nowhere to go as if he was born nowhere or fell from heaven. But the fact is we can’t force and likewise if they do not leave we can’t have space to renovate properly.
“We are trying our possible best to renovate and put all hostels to proper look and some of our students are being careless to the extent of burning the room. It occurred in Moremi, Fajuyi and Awolowo hall.
“There must be sanity in this system, you people(students) are giving us problems. It’s our intention before that we will try to renovate all halls of residence before freshers resume by April 3 but from my quarters here I can’t guarantee much for now.”
Aransi assured that the university will make a hostel available for students who have no choice but to remain on campus.
