Nkem Owoh, the veteran Nigerian actor popularly known as Osuofia, is celebrating a major milestone today — his 70th birthday. Born on February 7, 1955, in Udi, Enugu, Osuofia has become a household name in Nigeria, synonymous with laughter and entertainment.

Early life

Osuofia’s journey to stardom began with his early education in Nsukka. He attended both primary and secondary schools in the city before proceeding to the University of Ilorin, Kwara. However, his stint at the university was brief, as he later attended the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

He served his compulsory one-year national youth service in Ogun state.

From engineering to acting

Despite studying engineering, Owoh had always known that he could act. He started taking part in stage plays right from his secondary school days. After completing his national youth service, Osuofia worked briefly as an engineer before transitioning to a career in acting.

Osuofia’s breakthrough in the entertainment industry came when he joined the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as a writer. He contributed to popular programs like ‘The New Masquerade’ and ‘Basi and Company.’ His subsequent move to Lagos led to his involvement in the 1992 thriller movie ‘Living in Bondage,’ which opened doors for his acting career.

His iconic role in the movie ‘Ikuku’ birthed the character that has become synonymous with his name. Owoh also gained widespread prominence for his role in ‘Osuofia in London’ (2003). The movie’s success marked the beginning of Osuofia’s rise to fame, making him one of Nigeria’s most beloved comedic actors.

In addition to his acting career, Osuofia has also ventured into music. His 2005 satirical song ‘I Go Chop Dollar’ addressed advanced fee fraud (419), while other notable songs include ‘Know Me When I Am Poor,’ ‘Osuofia,’ ‘Olamma,’ and ‘Susana’.

Awards and recognition

Throughout his illustrious career, Osuofia has received numerous awards and nominations. He won the ‘Best Lead Actor’ category at the 2008 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 2017 AMAA.
