Comedian Mr Jollof has issued a public apology following a physical altercation with social media activist VeryDarkMan that erupted mid-flight on Monday.

The incident, captured in a viral video that showed the two trading blows inside an airplane cabin, sparked widespread public condemnation and drew a response from aviation authorities.

Mr Jollof took to Instagram to direct his apology primarily to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and fellow passengers for the disruption caused.

The comedian, however, defended his actions, stating he was provoked and acted in self-defense.

Mr Jollof claimed the conflict stemmed from long-standing, unproven infidelity allegations that VeryDarkMan had made against his wife, which are currently the subject of a court case.

The entertainer recounted that upon boarding the flight, he chose to ignore VeryDarkMan, who was seated several rows ahead.

He said the situation escalated when VeryDarkMan allegedly began making direct threats.

“The matter is ongoing, as my wife took him to court,” he said.

“I was already in my seat, 7B, and he was looking at me eyeball to eyeball. I know he was the last person boarding, and I chose to ignore him because my wife can go to court. On the plane, he looked at me and asked if I did what I wished. He was in seat 4F, while I was in 7B.

“Then he said something about wanting to slap me. I tried to keep my cool, but I know that toxic people will always provoke you. I believe in resolving problems peacefully, either through the courts or by reporting to the police. That is how I always operate.

“As our conversation continued, some passengers passed and he started making threats. He said he would slap me if I did not behave.

“When he got up from his seat, I felt compelled to defend myself. It is important to stay sharp and aware in such situations. When he made another move, I prepared to react. In self-defense, I needed to strike back as he restricted my airflow, and I was struggling to breathe.

“Despite everything, I maintained respect for my wife, a woman I honour deeply, and I do not tolerate anyone disrespecting her online. He could not prove his claims, and I am holding him accountable for the damage he has done.

“Let this be a lesson: we must handle conflicts wisely and uphold our dignity. A promise was made, and today, that promise was kept.”

The NCAA said it will sanction VeryDarkMan and Mr Jollof over the incident.

Their conflict started in 2024 when VeryDarkMan claimed Mr Jollof’s wife Esinjemiyotan used promiscuous means to secure her husband’s appointment as the senior special assistant (SSA) on new media to Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta state governor.

The social media celebrity further accused her of having an affair with an internet fraudster at a hotel in Delta.

In response, Esinjemiyotan filed a N500m lawsuit against the social media activist for alleged defamation.

She also asked the court for an order directing the activist to publicly apologise in at least two national newspapers and on all his social media platforms.
