Obi Cubana, the Abuja-based business mogul, has spent his second night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The anti-graft commission had grilled the 46-year-old nightlife promoter on Monday for alleged money laundering and tax fraud.

On Tuesday, Onwumelu Valentine, the businessman’s friend and colleague, claimed that he had been released from custody.

“Thank u Jesus!! @obi_cubana is free. We gat Jesus!!! . Dis Dance is for all my fans. I love u all,” he had announced via his Instagram page.

But a top source in the commission told TheCable Lifestyle that the socialite is still in custody.

“That’s not true,” the source said of the administrative bail reportedly given to him.

“You can’t be granted bail and you’ll still be in the custody. You can be offered bail but if you have not met the condition, you’ll still be around.”

The case has continued to elicit different reactions, as many Nigerians — including celebrities — registered their views on social media platforms.

2Baba, Peter Okoye, Ubi Franklin, and Cubana Chief Priest earlier joined other celebrities to demand the release of the socialite using the hashtag #FreeObiCubana.

Abba Bichi, son of Yusuf Bichi, the director-general (DG) of the Department of State Services (DSS), also described Cubana as “a man of dignity”.

Obi Cubana, whose real name is Obinna Iyiegbu, became a viral sensation after he buried his mother, who died in December last year, in grand style.
