Mercy Johnson-Okojie, the Nollywood actress, has come under intense criticism on social media for analysing the skyrocketing prices of essential food items; no thanks to the dollar-to-naira exchange rate.

The official market rate between naira and dollar as of November 13 stands at N780 per $.

The film star recently shared a video of herself in the kitchen engaging her followers in a humorous inquiry about the rising costs of food items.

Mercy also questioned the connection between the dollar-to-naira exchange rate and the rising cost of eggs.

“I dey confuse. I sey make I ask. This egg now dem set dollar do go up so egg don cost. The fowl wey lay this egg dey abroad or dey Nigeria? You understand wetin dey bother me. The fowl wey lay this egg, e dey abroad? Make I understand sey na dollar dem take ship the fowl come or the fowl dey Nigeria,” she said in pidgin English.

“So this particular fowl now wey lay this egg, e dey abroad?”

The video, however, did not sit too well with users of X; some of whom vented their displeasure at the movie star.

While a section of users accused Mercy of being “insensitive” to the plight of Nigerians under the current government — which Prince Okojie, her husband, is part of — others schooled the actress on the cost of items used to feed the chickens among others.

Mercy was at the forefront with her husband during the election campaign.

They also both attended a thanksgiving service after Okojie won the election.
