Marianne Faithfull, the English singer best known for her ‘As Tears Go By’ hit, has died at 78.
Republic Media, Faithfull’s music promotion company, announced via X, that the singer died “peacefully surrounded by her family” on Thursday in London.
“Thursday, January 30th, 2025. It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter, and actress Marianne Faithfull,” the post reads.
“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”
The cause of her death however remains unknown.
Some colleagues and friends also took to social media to pay their last respects to the deceased.
Mick Jagger, Faithfull’s friend and co-writer of her hit song, shared photos of them over the years while reflecting on their relationship.
He also described her as a “wonderful friend and beautiful singer” who will always be remembered.
“I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull. She was so much part of my life for so long,” he wrote via an Instagram post.
“She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer, and a great actress. She will always be remembered.”
On his part, Keith Richards, the English singer and co-writer of the hit song, said: “My heartfelt condolences to Marianne’s family! I am so sad and will miss her. Love, Keith.”
Faithfull was born in 1946. She started her singing career in 1964 after being discovered by Andrew Loog Oldham, Rolling Stones’ manager.
Her self-titled debut album was released a year later, with ‘As Tears Go By’ reaching number nine on the UK singles chart.
The singer was prolific throughout the ’60s and released a total of 21 solo albums throughout her career.
She received several awards and accolades for her talents and achievements.
In 2009, during the Women’s World Awards, she received the World Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2011, she was made a Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the government of France.
Faithfull was also an actress known for roles in ‘I’ll Never Forget What’s Name,’ ‘The Girl on a Motorcycle,’ and ‘Hamlet.’
In 1965, Faithfull married artist John Dunbar, with whom she had Nicholas, a son, but left the marriage to be with Jagger.
The pair, however, split in 1970 but seemingly remained on good terms.
