Malik Abdul Basit, a founding member of The Roots, an American hip-pop band, has passed away at 47.

The music group broke the sad news in a statement on its social media pages on Wednesday night.

The cause of his death, however, was not disclosed.

In the statement, the group described his death as a “great loss”, adding that the deceased, better known as Malik B, would be remembered for his charming personality and his devotion to Islam.

The group also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the deceased’s family during the mourning period.

“It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Basit,” the statement read.

The American rapper, born on November 14, 1972, featured on the first four albums released by The Roots, before departing the group.

He would later release two studio albums dubbed ‘Street Assault’ in 2005 and ‘Unpredictable’ in 2015.

His death further stretches the list of celebrities who have breathed their last since the dawn of the year.
