Onyeka Onwenu, the Nigerian music legend fondly referred to as ‘the Elegant Stallion’, passed away on Tuesday.

The ‘One Love’ hitmaker died at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos. She had performed at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okoli, the founder of Emzor pharmaceutical manufacturing company, in Lagos, where she was said to have slumped.

Born on January 31, 1952, Onwenu was multitalented; a singer, songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, and politician.

The Imo-born songstress began her music career in 1981 and released an album titled ‘For the Love of You’. Her sophomore album ‘Endless Life’ was produced by the late Sonny Okosun.

As a secular artiste, the 72-year-old adopted a more Afrocentric sound. She, however, made the transition to gospel music in the 90s.

During her decades-long music career, Onyeka released an avalanche of hit songs like ‘One Love’, ‘You and I’, ‘Iyogogo’, ‘Falling in Love’, ‘Odenigbo’, ‘Ekwe’, ‘Alleluya’ and ‘Dancing in the Sun’ that will leave an indelible mark in the Nigeria music space.

She also won a plethora of awards for her craft.
