Lilian Afegbai, the Nigerian actress, has expressed her frustration over the high cost of wedding fabric, known as asoebi, for a Lagos wedding.
In a recent Instagram video, the film star shared her shocking experience when she discovered that the asoebi for a friend’s wedding was priced at $1,200, equivalent to nearly two million naira.
Afegbai recounted how she initially thought the price was in naira, N1,200, and was surprised to see the dollar sign.
She questioned the extravagance of such wedding expenses, emphasizing the pressure it puts on guests.
The actress also urged couples to be mindful of their guests’ financial capabilities and remember that life continues after the wedding.
“I was on my own when a friend of mine sent me an invitation to her wedding, after which I congratulated her happily,” she said.
“I checked the date to make sure the date didn’t clash with my schedule then I saw the aso ebi price which was 1200, I initially thought the price was in naira, thinking, ‘shey she’s doing giveaway?’
“Then I saw the dollar sign at the back. I decided to check convert it, over a million naira for the aso ebi I would wear only once?
“It’s not good na, everybody should relax. You are pressuring people, this is the reason some people use their savings for wedding. You should relax, there is life after the wedding.”
