The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) wants prospective lawyers to have a first degree in another discipline before seeking admission into law faculties of tertiary institutions.
According to the NBA, the move is to raise the standard of the legal profession in Nigeria.
A 23-man committee was inaugurated by Abubakar Mahmud (SAN), NBA president, while the chairman and secretary are Anthony Idigbe and Aminu Gamawa respectively.
Although the idea is still being discussed by the committee, it seeks to give the legal profession a new face, Vanguard reports.
A statement released by NBA and signed by Isiaka Olagunju, secretary of the body, said, “Given the current size of the legal profession, its exponential growth in recent years in relation to the needs of the Nigerian economy, the committee will consider the desirability of candidates seeking admission to the law faculties in Nigeria to possess a degree in another discipline as a condition for admission.
“The Nigerian Bar Association has repeatedly expressed concerns in the falling standard of legal education and legal practice. This is a disturbing phenomenon that must be addressed urgently and adequately.”
The committee is also mandated to “review the current regulatory objectives and the regulatory architecture of the legal profession and advise on its suitability to meet the current requirements for a robust, responsive and independent modern legal profession in Nigeria.’’
