‘Iconic Lagos’, the multi-media exhibition organised by Bolaji Alonge, the Nigerian photographer and journalist, is set to hold between September 17 to 25.
In a blog post, Alonge said the exhibition “is about celebrating everyday life in Lagos, honouring its inhabitants and exploring what makes the city unique”.
The photojournalist said it has become imperative for Nigerians to define “our own image” amid the extant challenges facing the country.
“Defining our own image is one way of taking charge of our future. Iconic Lagos presents an alternative narrative that will remain tattooed on the viewers’ retina,” he added.
“Celebrating the beauty around us in spite of everyday challenges and the current global instability is not luxury, it is a necessity.”
The exhibition, which holds at Didi Museum in Victoria Island, Lagos is made up of three segments namely: photography by Bolaji Alonge, mixed media images by Jason Ogbazi/Alonge and artworks by other artists.
Alonge said the exhibition will also celebrate works of Biyi Bandele, the late novelist and movie director, who died in August.
“Several shots by recently departed multi-talented movie director Biyi Bandele are also part of the exhibition as a tribute to his life. The Nigerian-British creative genius spent a lot of time in Lagos in recent years and documented Lagos Island daily on social media,” he added.
Alonge also said 20 artworks by artists from US, India, South Africa, Belgium, Benin Republic, UK, Abuja, Osogbo and Lagos will be presented as part of the exhibition.
