Kim Kardashian, the US media personality, and Kris Jenner, her mother, have sued singer Ray J for alleged defamation after he claimed they were under a federal investigation.
According to People, Alex Spiro, their attorney, filed the lawsuit following Ray J’s public remarks about an alleged racketeering probe involving the Kardashians.
Two specific incidents were listed in the filing and cited as evidence of Ray’s alleged defamatory remarks.
The first occurred during TMZ’s Tubi documentary US vs. Sean Combs earlier this year, where Ray said: “If you told me the Kardashians was being charged for racketeering, I might believe it”.
The second happened during a livestream on September 24 where the singer allegedly told millions of social media followers that a federal racketeering investigation had been launched into the Kardashian family.
In a statement, Spiro said the “Kardashians usually ignore controversies,’ but Ray’s claims were so “damaging and dangerous” to their reputations that they had to take legal action.
He argued that the singer has been using his old connection with Kim to keep himself relevant, adding that Ray is “deliberately dragging them into scandals to benefit from their fame”.
The attorney also claimed that Ray “has engaged in a sustained campaign of harassment and defamation” against Kardashian and Jenner “for more than two decades”.
“Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian have never brought a defamation claim before nor have they been distracted by noise — but this false and serious allegation left no choice,” he said.
“Unable to accept the end of his fleeting relationship with Ms. Kardashian over twenty years ago, Ray J has repeatedly sought to attach himself to plaintiff’s names and exploit their prominence for personal gain.
“Ray J’s public statements are blatantly false. No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations.
“These statements were presented as factual assertions about ongoing federal criminal proceedings, not as speculation or opinion. Ray J’s publication of these serious criminal accusations without any attempt at verification or corroboration from legitimate law enforcement sources.
“Who would have readily confirmed that no such investigation exists — constitutes reckless disregard for the truth under the actual malice standard. His reliance on his own unsubstantiated assertions, despite having no factual basis or credible source for these inflammatory allegations, demonstrates a fundamental disregard for truth and a willful intent to harm Plaintiffs’ reputations.”
Ray J and Kim dated from 2002 till 2007. The relationship, however, hit the rocks following the release of their sex tapes in 2007.
In 2022, Ray alleged that Kim and Kris were involved in the leak of the sex tape.
