Justin Bieber, Canadian singer-songwriter, says the first year of his marriage to Hailey Baldwin was “really tough and scary”.

The lovebirds tied the knot in September 2018 at a New York City courthouse, before having a bigger ceremony with friends and family in South Carolina in October 2019.

In a recent interview for GQ‘s May cover story, the 27-year-old multiple-award winner admitted that a lack of trust had made things tough between them in their first year.

The ‘Peaches’ singer also recounted how he battled trauma and other personal struggles but could not open up to his wife due to fear of losing her.

“The first year of marriage was really tough because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff. There was just a lack of trust,” he said.

“There were all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with because it’s scary. You don’t want to scare them off by saying, ‘I’m scared.”

Bieber also explained that things eventually got better in the marriage, noting that the loneliness he felt before he found his wife disappeared while the pair are now creating moments and building memories as a couple and family.

“It’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to before I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that,” he added.
