Joeboy says he knew he would be a successful musician after meeting Wizkid.
In a podcast interview, Joeboy recalled how he met Wizkid for the first time in 2018.
He said Wizkid has made young people believe they can be successful.
The singer said meeting the Grammy-winning music star was the confirmation he needed to “go all in”.
“I said the day that I see Wizkid, I would know for sure that I will be successful,” Joeboy said.
“So in 2018, I was with Mr Eazi and I followed him to a show. During that time, I was always behind him, I was usually in his shadow, observing. So I stood in a corner while Eazi was having a conversation with Wizkid.
“Then Wizkid looked at me and told me to come over. I looked behind me, thinking he was talking to someone else. Wizkid spoke to me and that was when I decided to just go all in. I was like that’s the sign I needed and that was it.
“One thing I really appreciate about Wiz is that he made young people believe that they can be young and be popping. I can be young and be one of the greatest.
“Before Wiz, if any artiste pops it was probably like at a very later stage in life at that point. But after Wiz, young people were coming through. Young people started going hard. Big shoutout to Wizkid for that.”
Born Joseph Akinwale, Joeboy gained popularity under Empawa Africa, a record label owned by Mr Eazi.
In 2019, he won the ‘Best Artiste in African Pop’ prize at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).
The singer also bagged the ‘Best Pop’ category at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival in 2020.
