The killer of Jacqueline, wife of Clarence Avant, the US music executive, has been sentenced to three life terms in prison with a minimum of 190 years.
The Los Angeles county district attorney’s office announced the verdict on Aariel Maynor in a statement on Tuesday.
Jacqueline, 81, was shot and killed during a burglary at their home in Beverly Hills, California in the early hours of December 1, 2021.
Maynor pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon in Los Angeles superior court last month.
The 30-year-old also pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree residential burglary with a person present.
The district attorney’s office said Maynor, who was arrested on December 3, used a long-barrel assault pistol.
“He shot a completely vulnerable victim, 81 years old, no match for him, and she was caught by surprise,” Kathryn Solorzano, the judge, said before announcing the sentence.
“And then he left (her) there and compounded the issue by firing multiple rounds at the unarmed security guard.”
George Gascón, the Los Angeles district attorney, said the sentencing marked “the end of a tragic case that rocked” the community.
“Mr. Maynor will be ineligible for early parole, and will spend the rest of his life in prison,” the attorney added.
“This also prevents a painful and lengthy process of trial for the Avant family, a process that can be traumatizing.”
Jacqueline was known in California as a philanthropist who was dedicated to helping low-income neighbourhoods.
Clarence, her 90-year-old husband, worked with the likes of Louis Armstrong, SOS Band, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Babyface.
