David ‘Davido’ Adeleke, Nigerian Afropop singer, has reacted to the ruling that led to Senator Ademola Adeleke, his uncle’s defeat at the appeal court in Abuja.
The award-winning singer took to his Instagram account on Thursday to express sheer disappointment at his uncle’s loss to Gboyega Oyetola; after the appeal court ruled in favour of him in the Osun 2018 governorship elections.
“My people, we cannot hide our disappointment at the judgment of the Court of Appeal. It hurts, it’s extremely painful. But guess what? It is not the end. Far from it. Everyone remain calm,” he wrote on May 9, 2019.
“I want to urge all our supporters to remain calm at this time. As you all know there is one last and important lap. It is time for the last lap and the God I know and serve is in control.
“We have won the first leg. We have lost the second leg but I am certain that the highest court in the land will rectify and restore all that has been stolen from us with this judgment! Everyone stay calm and stay safe! See you at the Supreme court.”
Adeleke was declared winner by the election tribunal after he went to court to challenge Oyetola’s victory, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The tribunal ruled that the rerun election conducted in the state after the initial poll was illegal.
Joseph Fuwape, the returning officer, declared that Oyetola won with a total of 255,505 votes while Adeleke polled 255,023 votes.
But the tribunal had ruled that Oyetola was not validly returned as the winner of the election.
