Florence Obi, the vice-chancellor (VC) of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has called for a robust external security presence to avert all threats of insecurity on campus.
NAN reports that the VC spoke when Aminu Alhassan, Cross River commissioner of police, paid a courtesy visit to her office in Calabar on Monday.
Obi lamented the recent threats to lives and cases of armed robbery recorded in the staff quarters of the institution.
The VC said if the situation is not checked, other crimes like kidnapping, cultism, and hard drug intake — which had been successfully managed over the past few years — would resurface on campus.
She said the institution lacks sufficient security personnel to man all vulnerable entry and exit points.
Obi commended the commissioner for his visit and interest in the security operations and policing of the institution.
In his remark, Alhassan assured the VC of his command’s commitment to strengthening the security architecture in the institution.
He said the police, in collaboration with the internal security of the varsity, would intensify security surveillance in the institution to ward off criminals.
The development comes weeks after Felix Akpan, a professor of political science, at the institution was killed by suspected gunmen in his apartment.
