Some Nigerians have taken to Twitter to taunt Desmond Elliot, an actor and politician, following Godwin Obaseki’s re-election for second term as Edo governor.
Obaseki secured 307,955 votes across 18 local government areas while Osagie Ize-Iyamu, his main challenger and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), polled 223,619.
Before his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on the platform of which he won, he had campaigned about ending political godfatherism, which he said was effective in Lagos but won’t be tolerated in Edo.
TheCable Lifestyle had also reported how Elliot berated Obaseki for adopting “Edo no be Lagos” as his re-election mantra, while describing his own political career as being a product of godfatherism.
Shortly after Obaseki was declared winner of Edo poll, quite a number of Nigerians took to Twitter to call out the Nollywood star, while reiterating their mostly condemnatory comments towards his support for godfatherism.
“Tell Desmond Elliot that, in Edo state, we retire godfathers,” a user wrote.
“Desmond Elliot ought to be ashamed of the foolishness he came out to display not long ago. With the whole #EdoNoBeLagos conversation,” another user wrote.
Below are tweets portraying the reaction of Nigerians.

As a Nigerian, Discussing politics with a Lagosian is the last thing you should do.
These people don’t know what politics is, Godfatherism is what they know.
You can ask Desmond Elliot if you think otherwise.

Desmond Elliot ought to be ashamed of the foolishness he came out to display not long ago. With the whole #EdoNoBeLagos conversation.
It looks like once they become politicians, all sense of reasoning suddenly disappears.

Desmond Elliot should hide his face in shame. In a time like this when it is expected of elected public office holders to display some intellectual sagacity of sorts in advancing comments on burning political issues, he chose to make asinine and obtuse remarks as his own two cents. It’s not his fault though, it only underscores how vacuous his mind really is. I hope going forward that politicians like Desmond, who would laud such aberration as ‘godfatherism’ and even unabashedly declare support for it notwithstanding the deleterious strains it has had on our nation’s polity, should be perpetually locked out of the corridors of power as they have nothing valuable to conduce
