Desmond Elliot, the Nigerian actor turned politician, has reacted to the newly released report of the Lagos state judicial panel of inquiry into the Lekki tollgate shooting of last year.
The panel report, which was presented to the public on Monday, confirmed that the shooting at the toll plaza on October 20, 2020, can be likened to a “massacre.”
The report also listed names of 48 people killed or injured on the night as the country’s soldiers shot at EndSARS protesters.
The findings have spurred an avalanche of reactions from concerned Nigerians, particularly the youth and celebrities like Mr Macaroni, DJ Switch and Falz.
In a chat with TVC on Tuesday, the Lagos state lawmaker said he has always known there was calamity and chaos on that night at the tollgate.
The actor added that he knew that the truth regarding the incident would surface, stating that it was a pattern for the government in power.
“I read it, and it was very heartbreaking. Heartwrenching. I knew there was a calamity, chaos. Except you are not Nigerian, or you are not human. You would feel for everybody,” Elliot said.
“I have always said something. When MKO died and the government of the day denied and denied, it took this government to come and say you know what, we have wronged you; this is the truth. And they actually gave Democracy Day.
“We have always said the truth comes out. There is no how you would try to hide it, the truth would come out.”
Elliot had gotten a lot of hot air when a video of him criticising the protesters on the floor of the Lagos state house of assembly surfaced last year.
He also became Nigeria Twitter’s number one scapegoat, with memes and banter straying his way for days.
