One of the suspects connected to the killing of Uwaila Vera Omozua, a student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), while studying inside a church, has claimed that he received N1 million to murder his victim.

The 100-level microbiology student of UNIBEN had died from injuries sustained after she was attacked with a fire extinguisher and raped inside a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) near Ikpoba Hill in Benin.

After months of investigation, the police in Edo arrested and paraded six suspects identified as Nelson Ogbebor, Akato Valentine, Tina Samuel, Mary Ade, Nosa Osabohien and Collins Ulegbe.

During questioning, Collins, who hails from Agbor in Delta state, claimed that Ade, his landlady, gave them N1 million to kill the undergraduate.

Nosa, a phone repairer, was the first to be apprehended by the police. The suspect said he bought late Vera’s phone from Collins for N17,000.

On his part, Collins alleged that Ade asked him to wipe the deceased’s private part with a handkerchief for “ritual purposes”.

Ade, however, denied the allegation, saying she never asked him to carry out the act. She also vowed to prove her innocence in court.

Johnson Kokumo, the state police commissioner, said a post-mortem conducted on the deceased’s body showed that she was raped — a statement that Collins denied.

Godwin Obaseki, Edo governor, had ordered the police to thoroughly investigate, arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable in her death.
