Tiwa Savage says she “shamelessly” asked Don Jazzy, music producer and founder of Mavin Records, to sign her after he launched the label.
Speaking in a recent interview on Afrobeats Intelligence, Savage recalled how she made the request following her earlier rejection during the Mo’Hits era.
“When Don Jazzy started Mavin, I went to him and I said ‘Can you sign me now? Because you didn’t sign me in Mo Hits before’,” she said.
“He was just like, ‘You know what? I don’t have a first lady’. I asked him again shamelessly. And he just said yes.”
Savage described her time at Mavin as one marked by deep camaraderie and emotional support, which she now misses.
The 45-year-old singer said: “Who you sign to is very important. And I didn’t appreciate it until after I left.”
“Mavin still is like family. So if there’s something that’s going on online or whatever, I would run to Jazzy’s room and we will all come together and talk about it. If I have to cry, I do that and we’ll get through it,” she said.
“Being with a label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff, so I can’t really go to the Empire office and talk. I miss that part of it.”
Savage joined Mavin Records in 2012 and was one of the label’s leading artistes.
In May 2019, she exited Mavin and signed a global recording deal with Universal Music Group.
