Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish actor who played Hagrid in the ‘Harry Potter’ films, has died at 72.

BBC reports that Belinda Wright, his agent, revealed on Friday that he died in a hospital near Falkirk in Scotland.

She described Coltrane as a “unique talent” and a “brilliantly witty” film star.

The agent said his role as Hagrid in ‘Harry Potter’ “brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world”.

“For me personally I shall remember him as an abidingly loyal client,” Wright was quoted as saying.

“As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him.

“He is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell. They would like to thank the medical staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert for their care and diplomacy.

“Please respect Robbie’s family’s privacy at this distressing time.”

Coltrane started his career with an appearance alongside Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Emma Thompson in the sketch series ‘Alfresco’ (1983–1984).

He gained worldwide recognition as Rubeus Hagrid in the ‘Harry Potter’ film series (2001–2011).

The actor was also known for playing Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the “James Bond’ films ‘Golden Eye’ (1995) and ‘The World Is Not Enough’ (1999).

In 1990, Coltrane received the Evening Standard British Film Award: Peter Sellers Award for Comedy.

In 2011, he was recognized for his “outstanding contribution” to film at the British Academy Scotland Awards.

Coltrane married his one-time partner Rhona Gemmell in December 1999.

The couple had two children — a son Spencer and daughter Alice.

Coltrane and Gemmell separated in 2003.

Coltrane suffered from osteoarthritis.
