Prince Harry says he stepped down from royal duty because the “toxic” British press had been destroying his mental health.

Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, his 39-year-old wife, had last year announced their resignation as senior royals — a move that stirred heated controversies.

The couple had claimed — at the time — that the decision was to allow them to pursue financial independence.

But speaking with James Corden on The Late Late Show, the Duke of Sussex said he stepped down from royal duty because he could no longer endure the “toxic” British press.

“We all know what the British press can be like. And it was destroying my mental health. This is toxic. So, I did what any husband and father would do – I need to get my family out of here,” he said.

Harry, however, said he would continue to serve humanity regardless of his resignation from royal duty.

“But we never walked away – and as far as I’m concerned, what decisions are made on that side – I will never walk away. I will always be contributing – my life is public service – so wherever I am in the world it is going to be the same thing,” he added.

During the interview, Harry also opened up on his marriage to Meghan, adding that he knew she was the one on their second date.

“It wasn’t so much where we went but the fact we hit it off with each other, and we were just so comfortable in each other’s company,” he said.

“Dating me or any member of the Royal Family is kind of flipped upside down. All the dates become dinners or watching the TV or chatting at home.”
