The Nigerian entertainment industry has for the past few years been on an upward trajectory – and 2016 was not an exception.

Entertainers – artistes, comedians, actors, dancers, and filmmakers – aimed higher and achieved more than previous years.

While the music industry further blossomed and made giant strides in the international scene, Nollywood grew tremendously as Nigerian movies became the darlings of some international film festivals.

In 2016, some particular entertainers, songs, movies and television series made significant impact on the internet and dominated the Google web searches of Nigerians.

Some of the most popular songs on the Nigerian internet were ‘Mama’ by Kiss Daniel, ‘Pana’ by Tekno and ‘One Dance’ by Drake featuring Wizkid and Kyla.

Others were Phyno’s (Fada Fada), Kiss Daniel (Jombo), Olamide (Who You Epp), Lil Kesh (Ishe), Falz (Soft Work), Adekunle Gold (Ready) and Psquare (Bank Alert).

Nigerians were particularly interested in actors who passed away during the course of the year, some of which were Bukky Ajayi, veteran thespian, Henrietta Kosoko and Arakangudu.

Others were Dede One Day, Falz, Alan Rickman, Ani Iyoho, Juliet Ibrahim, Olumide Bakare and Halima Abubakar

Surprisingly, Nigerians searched for foreign hit movies and television series more than local productions.

In no particular order, the top ten most searched movies and TV series were: Suicide squad, Captain America civil war, Game of thrones season 6, Empire season 3, Deadpool, Batman vs Superman, Warcraft, gods of Egypt, London has fallen and X-men apocalypse.
