Omowumi Ogunrotimi, the Nigerian gender rights advocate and lawyer, has been named a recipient of the 2025 Global Citizen Prize.
The Global Citizen Prize is aimed at celebrating activists and leaders around the world.
Ogunrotimi received the award during a ceremony held in New York on April 30, 2025.
She was celebrated alongside other changemakers, including Valeriia Rachynska of Ukraine, Taily Terena of Brazil, and Lydia Amenyaglo of Ghana, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to advancing equity and justice in their respective communities.
Ogunrotimi’s recognition is a global acknowledgment of her impactful work and advocacy within the gender ecosystem, including her leadership in pushing for the passage of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill in the federal house of representatives.
She also spearheaded efforts that led to the localisation of sexual harassment prevention frameworks across 26 sub-national governments in Nigeria.
The event drew global attention and was attended by world leaders, policy influencers, and human rights advocates.
Notable dignitaries present included Amina J. Mohammed, United Nations deputy secretary-general; Sarah, duchess of York, renowned science educator Bill Nye, and José Manuel Barroso, chair of the Gavi Board.
