Zhao made history by becoming the first woman of colour — and only the second woman ever — to win the best director award at the 93rd annual Academy Awards.

Similarly, Daniel Kaluuya made history after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Fred Hampton, Black Panther chairman in ‘Judas And The Black Messiah’.

The 32-year-old London-born actor becomes the first non-white Briton to win an acting Oscar in the show’s 93-year history and only the sixth non-white actor to win the award.

‘Soul’, a 2020 American computer-animated fantasy comedy-drama film produced by Pixar Animation Studios, also took home the Best Animated Feature award. It is Pixar’s first film to feature a black character in the lead.

Yuh-Jung Youn was the first Korean performer to win at the ceremony in one of the four acting categories, snagging the Best Supporting Actress prize for her work in Lee Isaac Chung’s ‘Minari’, a 2020 drama.
